It all started with a family party and a bulky 90s home video camera. When it was handed to me, I was in shock and awe. It was the first time I was trusted with the “very expensive” camera. I was instantly drawn to telling the stories from the unseen perspectives. Crawling under the table as if the camera was a dog, going outside and shooting through the windows as if I was a passer-by, and climbing up furniture for those sweeping cinematic aerial views. I drew from the visuals imprinted in my mind from the countless blockbuster films my dad would take my family to. After this first experience, I was addicted. Every day I could, I tried to recreate scenes from my favorite films, with my sister playing most of the key roles.
My name is Enrique Vasquez, and since that (personally) historic summer I got to hold and shoot with a camera, I’ve dreamt of being a big-time director. Even with all the daydreams and compliments from family, I never thought it was the kind of future meant for a kid from the rough side of Chicago. It wasn’t until I got accepted to film school at Miami International
University, where I started to believe in this dream. As soon as I moved to my new city, I immediately sought to learn through experience. I visited production company after production company until I found one willing to hire an inexperienced first-year film student. I got to work on dozens of music videos and commercials with Picture Perfect Productions alongside legendary directors like Gil Green. One of my scripts was chosen for the thesis film at my University, which later won awards for the screenplay I wrote. A year before I graduated, I was offered a job as Editor at the ad firm Sapient Nitro, where I worked on commercials for clients like Chrysler, Sprint, and Coca-Cola. And after a fantastic time at Sapient, I was ready to tell my own stories outside of editing. As an independent visual artist, I worked passionately on countless projects, including having the opportunity to shoot during New York Fashion Week for acclaimed designer Misha Vaidya.
Under the moniker Visual Poetry...
I pull from my robust interdisciplinary background in video editing, visual effects, media theory, art history, and photography. My goal is to give confidence to all those who yearn to tell their stories and share their unique perspectives. I aim to deliver all my clients and viewers the hope that their perspective is worth hearing and seeing. I do this with an emphasis on building atmosphere and dimension by lending my unique, vibrant style influenced by artists across multiple art forms such as Basquiat, Bosch, Terrence Malik, Gasper Noe, Christopher Doyle, Dave Meyers, and even writer Haruki Murakami. Injecting into my visuals emotional surrealism, attempting to capture and convey all the irrepressible beauty and truth of the world. The great Pablo Picasso once said, “art is a lie that makes us realize truth.”
All that we see is poetry.
